Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox

Like antivirus software, web browsers are a thing of great debate as to which is the best. So if you are not a fan of Microsoft Edge, you can take your pick between Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I prefer Chrome as it syncs everything between by desktop PC, GPD Pocket and mobile phone. Some however may prefer more privacy with Firefox.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free, Panda Free Antivirus

Laptops and portable devices should always have some kind of antivirus on them as anyone can insert a USB stick into your device when you are not looking. There are many antivirus and anti-malware programs available but these two are the most popular and recommended by many. Both are free software with options to upgrade to more advanced features.

7zip

7zip is a great program that can create and extract archive files such as .zip and .rar. It is free and is very easy to use. This is a must have program on any Windows device as you never know when someone may send you an archive file that you are otherwise unable to open. It can also be used to archive large number of files into one file which is handy for sharing via email or Dropbox for example.

CCleaner

CCleaner is another must have app on any Windows device. It does a great job of scanning your PC for any junk or unneeded files and deletes them. It also supports cleaning the Windows registry and fixing any issues with it. Simply run it once a week and you will really see how much space is cleared up. This is especially apparent after a major Windows update which keeps the old install of Windows on the storage and can be several GB in size.

Kodi

Not just for Android, Kodi is also available on Windows. The very latest version of Kodi is available from the homepage or Windows Store and it works just like the Android version if you have previously used it. You can catch up on some videos, listen to your music collection or slideshow your photo album to friends.

Paint.net

Paint.NET is a free image and photo editing software. While not quite as comprehensive as Photoshop for example, it features a friendly interface and support for layers, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It is perfect for a quick photo edit without the need to boot up your desktop.

Audacity

You can’t get a better audio recording program for free than Audacity. It is great for recording interviews, podcasts and voice overs as an example. I always use it for the DroidBOX video voice overs and it is easy to use but very powerful if you delve a little deeper. A must have program if you do any audio recording.

IPVanish

Online security is a greater than ever issue, especially with portable devices such as mobile phones and laptops. VPN software such as IPVanish encrypt the data sent to and from your device making it extremely hard for anyone to snoop on you. As mentioned, this is important on portable devices as many people use free wifi at cafes, airports etc and anyone can access them and potentially capture your data.

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free open source office suite with Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base (databases), and Math (formula editing). It is compatible with a range of file formats such as Office, so there is no need to worry about not being able to open certain file types.

Notepad++

Notepad++ is a great app for whether you are updating some code or just want to read a text file. Amongst its features are Syntax Highlighting, PCRE (Perl Compatible Regular Expression) Search/Replace and Macro recording and playback. While this is not an app everyone will need or use, if you do work with text based files, you must check this one out.

Dropbox

Dropbox is a useful cloud based storage system that can be used for a variety of tasks. It is ideal if you want to quickly transfer files between your home PC and laptop, or to share files with friends or work colleagues. Dropbox is amongst the best of them and widely used and supported.

Spotify

Spotify is a popular music streaming service with access to millions of songs. There are both free and paid services available. A free service is available with occasional adverts, and the paid service offers extra features including higher quality audio and listen offline. Spotify can be played over a number of devices such as your GPD Pocket, mobile phone and desktop PC.

ShareX

ShareX is a free open source screen capture tool for your Windows device. It comes with a wealth of features including capturing the active window, full screen or selected regions. It can also save in a variety of file formats, as well as upload to image sharing sites such as Twitter, Tinypic and imgur. Other features include OCR (text capture) and annotations including adding text, rectangles, circles or arrows to the image.

VLC

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It features fast video decoding and supports just about every video format possible. Whether you are playing local or remote media, VLC is a must have. It can even connect to your home security camera if it supports it!

FileHippo

http://filehippo.com/

FileHippo is a free tool that scans the installed software on your PC and reports back if there is an update available for it. You can then simply click on the download button to download the update which then prompts you to install it. If you have many apps installed on your device then FileHippo is an amazing time saver as you no longer need to check each website for updates per app. The FileHippo website itself is also a great resource if you want to see what other software is popular or explore new software to try.
